In an oil-injected screw air compressor, air and oil are intimately mixed to lubricate, cool, and seal the compression chamber. Once compressed, this air–oil mixture must be separated effectively before the air enters the downstream system.

A high-quality oil separator ensures that the majority of the oil is captured and returned to the compressor circuit, keeping the discharge air exceptionally clean—typically with an oil content below 2–3 mg/m³.
