The oil separator—also known as the air–oil separator element—is one of the most critical components in a screw air compressor system. Its primary function is to separate lubricating oil from the compressed air mixture discharged from the air end.

When operating continuously under high pressure and temperature, even minor inefficiencies in separation can lead to excessive oil consumption, increased maintenance costs, and compromised downstream air quality.

Working Principle

Inside the separator housing, compressed air mixed with oil enters the element tangentially, creating a swirling motion. This centrifugal action forces larger oil droplets toward the outer wall, where they coalesce and drain back into the oil return line.

The remaining fine mist passes through multiple layers of fiberglass coalescing media, which capture and merge micro-particles into larger droplets. These are then channeled down to the oil return pipe for re-circulation.

The result: clean, dry compressed air exits the separator while the recovered oil returns to the lubrication system—ensuring efficiency and sustainability in operation.
